It would not be the first time I have been using a Nexus 7. I had the chance to try it thanks to NVIDIA – although I did not review it then. This time, the guys at Asus sent me a Nexus 7 – Wi-Fi + LTE for me to review. My mother, Mita (aka @mita56) has the Nexus 7 which she used to happily replace the iPad (10 inch; second generation; 64 GB; Wi-Fi + 3G) and has had no complaints since.
As soon I got my hands on the device, I checked what version it was running – Jelly Bean – but there was also an update notification. I knew this had to be the KitKat update – so I quickly set up my account on the Jelly Bean to use it for some time (like an hour or so) and then ran the update. 20 minutes later, the Nexus 7 was running KitKat and fairly amazing this update was.
For one thing, the device was smoother, faster and more fun to use. There were a few additional Google applications now available including the new Hangouts, Currents and the Google Voice – all of which I used and look forward to using someday.
The one thing that really struck me as a winner was the revisions in the design aspect. Slimmer, more powerful and NFC make the device more appealing to my senses as these are things that affect the daily usage. The display was sharper making colours pop (in the right way), made it easier on the eyes to use it in the night for my movies, and TV shows; making emails and attachments a blast to browse; and social media more fun to surf.
I never used the inbuilt sound – but I tried it and it was seemingly better and less tinny than the outgoing model.
All in all, the Nexus 7 is a fab device and barring the fact that I did not have Office 365 on this – when will you do this MS? – I totally recommend buying this device for your on-the-go content consumption!
